Carrie Beckwith-Fellows, of Northumberland, is known for sharing her life experience leading up to an autism diagnosis at the age of 35 at TEDx Vilnius[1], and her writing in health, disability, LGBTQ, rural living, and women's issues as a freelance writer.[2]
Autism
Carrie was diagnosed with autism at the age of 35, after self-referring to a diagnostic team for autism. She previously received a series of misdiagnosis for bipolar disorder, borderline-personality disorder, depression, and mixed anxiety disorder, and spent ten years in inpatient psychiatric care. During two of those years, she had been left blind due to inappropriate prescription.
At TEDx Vilnius, she shared her experience and called for parents and educators to stop teaching children to behave in socially-accetptable ways to their own detriment, which in her case caused her autism to go completely unnoticed, even to herself, for more than 30 years.
