Heinrich Magnus Manske, better known by his middle and last names Magnus Manske, is a German biochemist and software developer. He researches on malaria, parasites, and microbes and participates in the development of the MediaWiki system.[1]
In 2002, he wrote one of the first versions of the software that later became MediaWiki, as a summer project while he was studying biochemistry at the University of Cologne.
In 2006, he was awarded a doctor of philosophy in biochemistry[2]. His thesis, titled GENtle, a free multi-purpose molecular biology tool, was essentially a presentation of the GENtle software he developed for bioinformatic research[1].
In 2007, Magnus started working at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. He was part of the malaria team until he transferred to the parasites and microbes team in 2017[1].
In 2025, Magnus became a software developer at the Leibniz center of information for technology and natural science, University of Hannover[1].
Today, besides being a productive biochemistry researcher, Magnus continues to actively participate in MediaWiki development, writing, in his own words, "an unreasonable number of Wikipedia and Wikidata data tools"[1]. His most famous creations include the Cite extension.
