DSM-5-TR, known in full as The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision, is the 2022 version of the official taxonomic and diagnostic guide published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) for mental disorders, based on the 2013 version: DSM-5.
About the manual
Text Revision
APA chose to publish a text revision instead of a sixth version based on the living document principle.
Intended audience
The manual states that it aims to provide a clear, concise, and standardised description of each mental disorder for:[1] (p5)
- medical professionals,
- patients,
- family members of patients,
- researchers.
Warning on misuse
The manual warns against pronouncing diagnostics by the mechanical application of disorder descriptions.[1] Clinical judgements by medical professionals are necessary for accurate diagnostics.[1]
Classification and organisation
The manual classifies the different mental disorders according to 11 criteria:[1]
- neural substrates,
- familial traits,
- risk factors
* genetic, * specific environmental,
- biological markers,
- temperamental antecedents,
- emotional or cognitive processing abnormalities,
- symptom similarity,
- course of the disorder,
- high comorbidity,
- shared treatment response.
